ADVANCED COMIC CREATION

SATURDAYS  |  1:00 PM – 4:00 PM            2/15/25 – 5/10/25

12 WEEKLY COURSE MEETINGS

So you've learned how to make comics pages that you like. What now? Advanced Comic Creation was made to answer that burning question, taking students through the process of developing a long-form comic story, from rough idea to richly-developed pitch deck. Build a comic book world and discover how to tell stories there, with a course that delves deeper into the visual and storytelling structures of the medium. The course will cover the creation of indelible comic concepts, the visual and narrative development of those concepts, and effective ways of communicating what a great comics project will be, so that even the most sleep-deprived editor will be able to tell what it is you're presenting them with. A lot of the course will focus on writing techniques that often remain mysterious even in fiction writing programs (speaking from experience here), including varied approaches to plot structure, character development, and scriptwriting. With less comics history than in the first session, there will be more focus on deep reading of comics with particularly effective demonstrations of the effects we cover. Reading these books is not required (though perhaps encouraged?). Students will complete the class with a shiny, brilliant pitch deck for a fantastic comic, including your exciting development of the world of the story, characters, storylines, visual materials, and several pages of the finished comic. You'll be all ready to pitch this comic, or to start making it yourself, with a compelling hook and a successful narrative plan!

Prerequisite: My Comic Book Illustration course, or a similar such prior experience. This class assumes you can already draw like the wind: quickly, and with little hesitation.
